Trailer Scoring Competition Winner

It has been a busy few weeks writing for a superb competition run by Thinkspace Education. The brief: score music for a 1 minute trailer for the film A Martian Christmas.

The sound sources and style were left completely up to me so being Christmas how about a full orchestra with plenty of pitched percussion and all the trimmings? That will do me fine. I used a variety of techniques to mimic sound effects whilst keeping the narrative flowing and yes, dabbled in some micky-mousing of the visual action (check out the twinkle toes of Santa down the chimney… I couldn’t resist). Aiming to hit fast and furious sync points made life interesting to say the least, but it seemed to pay off: it seemed to go down really well with the guys at Thinkspace.

The prize for first place included a Gold Edition Course of my choice and the content is amazing.  Thank you to Bradley and Tim for their advice and contact during this and of course to Guy for his fantastic resources and online tutorials. Do check them out they are so valuable to any aspiring composer.
